Free sound effect resources?
Main Post:
I'm somewhat new to game devlopment. Where's a good place I can go to obtain free sound effects for my games?
Top Comment: I believe every year GDC releases a collection of Creative Commons audio, music, and sound effects produced by contestants. At the very least they did for 2019: https://sonniss.com/gameaudiogdc19/
Nashville games
Main Post:
How can I watch Nashville sounds games? Ideally not having to get a subscription to anything.
Top Comment: Last year it was part of the basic MLB ballpark subscription - $29.99 for the entire season. I always subscribe to get the radio broadcasts, but it includes all the minor league games tv broadcats as well.
Legality of Using Sampled Sounds in Games?
Main Post:
Not trying to subvert the law or be sneaky with it, just totally ignorant to IP copyright stuff. I know that when musicians sample other songs, they need a special license from the original artist to avoid copyright infringement.
I would assume something similar would exist for sampling sounds for a game? If I were to sample a sound from another media source, remix or somehow alter it, maybe layer it with other sounds, would this be legal? Is it just a blanket "no" or is there any documentation on how different it would need to be? Thank you!
Top Comment:
The safest bet would be just don’t use someone else’s sampled material. There’s plenty of free stuff if you’re desperate.
The games sound sounds weird and almost like its played twice. Any ideas on how to fix it? : hoi4

What programs do you use to make the sounds for your games?
Main Post:
Hello, aspiring gamedev here. Already have a work in progress, with everything pretty much thought out; graphics, assets, etc.
Except I have overlooked one thing: sound. I have no experience with making sounds and I do not know where to start. I know how to apply it and how to play it, but I don't know how to create it. I don't want to buy sound assets, as that might be a even harder task (finding the website, contacting the owner, etc)
So I thought I could do the sound design myself. What is a recommended program for generating sound assets for a game? I already know a few ones that can make bit sounds, but I am looking for something more modern. What programs do you, as an indie developer, use to make the sounds for your games? Or,if not, a great library of assets?
I figure programs out easily, so learning it is not a problem. Are there any preferred sound creation programs among indie devs? What are the options that I have and what is, in your opinion, the best one, and why?
Top Comment: First, it’s probably best to take a look at freesound.org which has a lot of sounds you can tune and edit. Usually the best thing for sounds is recording something in real life and editing it.
Google Pixel 9 Pro XL Bad sounds in Games
Main Post:
Good day
i switched from s24 ultra to pixel 9 pro xl today
Everything is great, but the sound in the games is terrible. How suddenly I play videos, sounds in the system, etc. everything is absolutely great. However, as soon as I turn on a game, the sound sounds like a 30-year-old amplifier. Where could there be a problem??? When ads start to appear in any game, the sound is normal again.

That seems like a downgrade to me but not sure about the speaker issue
Hope future Forza games will have better car sounds. Assetto Corsa soundmodders are goated.

Top Comment: Forza's "problem" is that Forza contains more than 800 cars. As quantity increases, quality decreases.
A new PS5 update has brought back the original PS1 boot up screen and sounds to celebrate 30 years of PlayStation. You can also customize the home screen with sounds and designs from a variety of different PlayStation console generations

Top Comment: "For a limited amount of time" ? They can fuck right off with that. Give me unlimited time. This FOMO bullshit even with such little things is really killing any joy I once had with gaming. And Sony already shafted people using the themes from PS3 to PS4 and removing it completely for PS5, only to 'grace' us with limited time ones for a 30th anniversary?

Crypt Custodian is great but I hope other indie games don’t get swept under the rug. List of a few other awesome metroidvanias of the year.
Main Post:
Firstly, congratulations to Kyle Thompson, I always say he makes games, good games and is justifiably beloved on this sub. Crypt Custodian launched and for whatever reason several other indie Metroidvania devs didn’t choose a different time to publish. I personally would have steered clear of releasing this month. I’m sure Crypt Custodian will be at the top of many GOTY lists here on this sub but I want to say maybe when the dust settles, check out other metroidvanias that launched this year. Notably this month we had what I consider two other amazing metroidvanias that aren’t available on console and therefore have a much smaller reach. Are there any other small metroidvanias that you really enjoyed this month or year? Check out this link to u/deadmetroidvania profile for lists which is an excellent resource and helped me find a few other smaller ones I was ignorant about. Good luck to all games that release this year! Edit to add I played all of these on steam deck without issues. Ultimately, this might be the best month ever for metroidvanias.
