r/gamedev on Reddit: Free sound effect resources?

42 votes, 23 comments. I'm somewhat new to game devlopment. Where's a good place I can go to obtain free sound effects for my games? I've contemplated recording my own just with my mic and I feel like that's an okay option for certain things. There are sites with totally free non-attribution sounds if you don't want to worry about that, though I can't help but worry slightly regardless, just because I don't have much experience with that sort of thing. I haven't sold any games before though. There are specially created collections of sound effects for games, mobile applications and movie sound design at directory.audio. The sounds can be downloaded for free under Creative Commons license. But this license has a Non Commercial type, so check what type of license the files you download have.I found https://www.weloveindies.com/en after some searching and quite like it... 150.000+ sounds - free for all non-commercial stuff and cheap licenses for commercial releases. Music library could be bigger though ... Late reply, but maybe try searching " sound effects" i.e.Which site do you recomend to get Free Stock Sound Effects? ... The subreddit covers various game development aspects, including programming, design, writing, art, game jams, postmortems, and marketing.

10 Best Games With Unparalleled Sound Design

If you like games that make you grab your headphones, here are the 10 Best Games With Unparalleled Sound Design (Not Soundtrack!!!!) It can be specific areas in a game that stick with you, the way a particular enemy sounds or just the way your footsteps echo through an empty building, but it's just as important as any other aspect of a game. There are also the fantastic blood-splashing sound effects, giving you a visceral audio response every time you hack into some horrific creature's flesh and, of course, the horrifying growls and screams of the bosses, which sound every bit as disturbing as they look. Bloodborne is a top choice for getting a legit speaker system, turning down the lights and letting the atmosphere envelop you whole. ... SOMA is a lonely game and one that can often be more terrifying than any game out there. The sounds of a broken civilization echo through these dark and dreary corridors and when you soon find out you're not alone, those sounds become all the more dreadful to hear. The electronic, pained cries that you hear from the various "people" you encounter throughout the game are among gaming's most disturbing sounds period. That sound design kicks up a notch during the various boss battles too, with one against the mysterious Neil Vana really upping the ante from a tension-building standpoint. It makes you pay attention to every footstep of your enemies as well as listen for nearby commands being given out where your distance to the boss affects how clearly you hear the dialogue or not. As great as the gameplay is in Death Stranding 2, the sound design manages to stand alone as well.

Specifically, the games and sounds I remember hearing constantly while I was growing up. There's Pi’erre Bourne’s skittering, glitchy "power up"-style instrumentals and sound effects, and PinkPantheress’ unmistakable Sonic Adventure 2 vibe.Listen closely and you'll notice that gamer culture is all over the best music being made today. Sometimes, that influence is direct and obvious: full of digital cartoon effects and bright electro-pop that sounds straight out of Dance Dance Revolution. Other times, it's more subtle, capturing the emotional residue of growing up playing these games. The nostalgia is channeled through ethereal textures—sounds that evoke Sega Dreamcast, the old PlayStation loading screen, or blur into something that feels like a half-remembered dream. Alex G and Mk.gee have a gift for this kind of sonic memory—their songs can feel like a lost afternoon on the N64 as you wait for your crush to get on AOL Instant Messenger. Video games are to my generation—and those younger—what the movies once were to the previous ones, so it makes sense that they’d be so present in pop music, in all kinds of ways.

Sound design is easily one of the most underappreciated aspects of video game development. Sure, when someone does it really well, it’s iconic, and people talk about the soundtracks all the time, but that doesn’t happen all the time. Furthermore, it’s not just the soundtracks that help make the game special, but all the little sound effects and ambient noise that can help bring a world to life. The driving force throughout our development process was to make Civilization VII sound historically authentic and dynamically responsive to players’ choices, bringing sound to the forefront of the experience to enhance the gameplay and immerse players in the world of their chosen civilization like never before.”Civilization VII had a lot of sounds to create, and the team at Firaxis are happy to share how they did it and what it took to make it work.Part of the challenge, as Kadet noted, was that they wanted each personal civilization to have its “own identity” with its audio cues and noises. They also listened to how things were in past entries and attempted to update them or refine them so that they sounded even better than before.

I went to a Sounds game on a whim. I am not normally a baseball fan so I just wanted to experience a game in person since I hadn’t been in years. I had so much fun just enjoying the outdoorsy vibe. It happened to be Star Wars night, and the Hot Dog & popcorn was a good snack. The game outing is always a great experience. The food though needs to be better. There should be more options to meet other types of taste. The food does needs to be more tasty. by Cricket on 8/12/25First Horizon Park - NashvilleRating: 5 out of 5 · Beautiful stadium. 10 of the best video game soundtracks, chosen by DanTDM - Classic FM

For the second game in the Red Dead Redemption series, composer Woody Jackson took a completely different approach. Rather than sticking with the Morricone-inspired Wild West of the first game, the RDR2 soundtrack has a distinctly more modern vibe. As part of the quality control process, Jackson landed on what might be the coolest way a soundtrack has ever been put to the test. Armed with a gun from the same era as the game, set in 1899, he headed to a shooting range and listened to his soundtrack while he fired it.With a background in IT, Slavov felt his lack of classical training held him back as a composer initially, but that didn’t stop him from writing one of the most epic orchestral scores to a video game. Filled with leitmotifs and impactful instrumentation, the soundtrack won him the Best Soundtrack award at the video game BAFTAs in 2024, where he gave an emotional speech thanking the musicians who “left a piece of their heart in the music, because if you don’t leave a piece of your heart in the music, nobody can enjoy it.”Much like Koji Kondo six years earlier, the composer for Sega’s 1991 game Sonic the Hedgehog had their work cut out when it came to penning a theme. The Sega Genesis console was only capable of playing four sounds at once, and the game wasn’t finished yet with only concept art available for inspiration, so Masato Nakamura had to get creative. Before writing the music for The Last of Us, Argentine composer was probably best known for his film soundtracks – most notably Brokeback Mountain. In fact, he had been interested in scoring a video game for some time but had turned down all previous offers for not focusing enough on the stories and characters.

Halloween Game Sounds Like It Could Be Hitman For Serial Killers - GameSpot

A single-player and asymmetrical multiplayer set in a faithfully recreated Haddonfield from the 1978 slasher classic. Unfortunately, apart from the announcement trailer, there has been no further reveal of the gameplay--not even behind closed doors--and so it's still too early to have a clear idea of what to expect from Halloween's story mode, apart from that it will put you in the boots and behind the mask of Michael Myers. But from what I'm able to learn from Matthewson, it sounds deliciously like a serial killer's version of Hitman.Having what sounds like large sandbox maps is going to be crucial to Halloween's more slow-paced and stealth-based gameplay.Topping it off, it was during the show where the previously announced Halloween, based on the horror classic with Carpenter himself attached as executive producer, had its first trailer it was announced that his defining slasher horror classic Halloween is being turned into a game, with Carpenter himself attached as an executive producer.Given it's being developed by Illfonic--the studio behind other licensed horror or horror-adjacent games like Friday the 13th, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Predator, and Ghostbusters--in collaboration with Gun Media, Compass International Pictures, and Further Front, it shouldn't be a surprise to learn that this will consist of asymmetrical multiplayer.
